DAVID JOHN ATTYAH: PUNCH / MARK GENS: UTOPIA ART OPENING AT GATE PROJECTS
David John Attyah is a local SoCal artist and printmaker making waves in the art world with his mixed-media creations that explore the intersection of social and internal space. Attyah highlights the obvious and not so obvious tension between the reproducible and the handmade picture. using sometimes blatant imagery, Attyah exposes the juxtaposition between social control, collective consciousness, public ethics, individual identity and cultural transformation in the real world. he also is co-founding member of artist collaborative THINK AGAIN with Los Angeles-based artist S.A. Bachman. through THINK AGAIN’s public projects such as digital murals, billboards and wallscapes, exterior projections and viral renegade poster campaigns, Attyah’s latest work, PUNCH continues to explore the world of contradiction through etching, screen-printing and photography.
Mark Gens is a master of challenging perceptions by obscuring lines between object and subject thru his visual interpretations. working years with 3D constructions using aluminum, acrylics, plexiglas and most recently wood and stainless steel, Gens’ UTOPIA constructions continue to stun each observer with his take on mid-century modern, contemporary, craftsman and eclectic styles of artistic creation. playing with light, color and structure Gens re-establishes what is and is not – sharp edges disappear in hazy vibrations or that which appears to be ephemeral, breathes new life into the ordinary becoming timeless.
